Black Galaxy Glass Tumbler

$41.00

Handblown glass tumbler made by me! Use these to drink wine, beer, or whatever the hell else you’d like. These tumblers feature an original coloring process meant to create a rich contrast. The process for making these is quite involved but necessary to achieve my desired balance of color and form. (See below for the process)

Tumblers range from 3.5”-3.75” tall. Each tumbler is unique so you may not get the exact ones pictured. Hand wash recommended.

The Process:

  • Gather glass, color in black powder, then gather solid glass color strings onto the glass

  • Introduce a bubble into the glass; the glass expands causing the opaque colors to dilute

  • Shape glass using wood, metal, and paper to the desired shape

  • Place tumbler into kiln to anneal, a process in which the glass is cooled to room temp

  • At this point, the tumbler looks like a cone; the excess material is hot popped using a small torch, thus the mouth of the glass is revealed

  • The mouth of the cup is ground down using diamond lapidary disks and placed in the kiln; the kiln is brought up to 1150 degrees Fahrenheit

  • I pull the tumblers out and flame polish the mouth of the tumbler thereby rounding the tumbler mouth

  • The tumbler is placed back into the kiln to cool down and TA-DAAAA! A tumbler is born!

These tumblers feature metallic spots. This was an unforeseen occurrence. Certain colors react with one another resulting in a reduction reaction. The metals that create the color come to the surface, losing their previous appearance.

The first video shows the hot pop process. A 1/4” mark is scribed onto the glass. The tumbler is then spun while a torch is applied along the seam of the scribed mark. The heat causes stress in the glass and the glass will crack along the scribed mark. The scribed mark serves as a pressure release point.
